2009 Spring Alumni Bash

Hello All ~

The registration page is now up and running for our Spring Event at Dos Gringos. Click here to register. I've been working with the school and with Jon at Dos and this event is going to be AWESOME! We've got over 200 students RSVP'd for the event so it will be one for the record books.

I'm working with local vendors to get gifts donated for our raffle. If you own a business and would like to offer special services, please let me know!

In addition, I'm hoping to be able to raffle off a couple of 1 year memberships to the ASUAA. You'll notice that on the registration page, it asks you to make a standard contribution to the gift or you can enter any dollar amount. We are not asking for large sums of money, as I know that times are tough for everyone. But 1 year memberships are only $25 and the more we raise, the more we can raffle and hopefully get more people to become lifetime members.

Thank you again for your help and support with the Interdisciplinary Studies Alumni Club. I look forward to seeing you on Friday, May 15 at 5pm for all of the festivities!

ASU CARES, March 21st – Spring Community Service Event
ASU CARES is the University’s largest annual volunteer community service project. Every year students, staff & alumni volunteer for a day of community service. This year’s date for the ASU CARES event is Saturday, March 21st.

ASU Alumni around the country are invited to get involved with their local ASU Alumni Chapter or Club’s ASU CARES project on March 21st. Find information about the local ASU Cares project happening in your area in the list below and register now to volunteer with fellow Sun Devils for a day of community service!

ASU Alumni Association Medallion Scholarship

Hi Everyone,

The ASU Alumni Association Medallion Scholarship program is about to get started for this year's deserving high school seniors. I wanted to contact you to ask if you would be willing to help us again this year.

Although we are still reviewing our financial situation, we tentatively are planning to continue what we did last year by awarding 27 new scholarships that will each be worth $2,750 a year for four years at ASU.

We selected December 15, 2008 as our deadline to accept applications. That allows us to conduct the evaluations from December 22, 2008 to January 16, 2009. Hopefully, that will be enough time so that it doesn't interfere with anyone's holiday plans. We want to put the applications on a secure website again because that seemed to work pretty well last year.

There are all kinds of ways you can help:

You could be on the committee. Generally, that involves attending one or two meetings and helping us make decisions about the program. Committee members also get invited to the Spring awards banquet.

You could be an evaluator of written applications. As those of you who have done it before know, it only takes a couple hours to evaluate your portion of the applications and you can do it at home.

You could be a team leader. If you have already been an evaluator, you can share your experience by being a team leader. We'll recruit and organize the teams so all the leader has to do is make sure the team members get the information they need and answer any questions that might crop up. (If they stump you, Greg and I can help.) The team leaders also receive the evaluation forms from their team members, consolidate them and forward them to Greg.

We want to have six teams of five evaluators each, which means we need six team leaders and twenty-four evaluators.

We are also looking for a few volunteers to interview the 30 (maybe 36) finalists. The interviews will take up most of a Thursday and Friday and possibly a Saturday morning. We would like to get five interviewers who would be willing to attend all three days so that we can have some consistency in the evaluations.

You could also participate in the Alumni Ambassador program. This program connects alumni with our scholars for various opportunities throughout the year. I've attached a flyer for this program.

We would really appreciate your help again in selecting this year's Medallion Scholars. As those of you who participated in past years know, this is an easy way to help the Alumni Association and also have a huge impact in the lives of some very deserving students. A major plus is that you don't have to make a big time commitment in order to make a big difference.

Everyone on this list has mentioned that they might be interested, so please let us know that you are still willing to help out as a committee member, evaluator, leader, or interviewer. Remember, you are not limited to just one job.

Also, if you know someone else who you think would enjoy helping out, please share this information with them and encourage them to contact me.

I would also appreciate hearing if you are not interested so we can take you off our list. I look forward to working with you and will communicate more details as we near the application deadline.

I just found out that the Biltmore Fashion Park has changed the movie for 10/24. I guess they realized that showing a movie where Tom Cruise runs a brothel and has sex on the L train does not promote a family environment.

Instead, they will be airing the cult classic Sixteen Candles. Who can resist John Cusack with a bra on his head and Molly Ringwald getting felt up by her grandma?

If alums are members of the Alumni Association, they're entitled to make career advising appts, walk-in career advising and entrance to the career fairs. Career advising appts. are for 45 minutes; walk-in advising appts. are for 20 minutes. Walk-in advising is scheduled M-F, 10-12 and M-Th 1:30 to 3:30.

If alums are not members of the Alumni Association, they're entitled to walk-in advising appts and entrance to the career fairs. They also can pay $25 which allows them to meet with a career advisor for three 45-minute appts.

Chapter Photographer and Signature Event Committee Members Needed!

Are you interested in the position of Chapter Photographer?

The Chapter is looking for an individual that has a passion to take pictures whether their profession or not. Duties of this role would be to attend each Chapter gathering/event and capture it on film. There is no requirement that the individual must stay the entire time or even be there exactly when the gathering/event starts. We are looking for a one year commitment beginning January 08. Should you be interested but not able to commit for a year, please discuss the options with me.

Sun Devil Generations

Sun Devil Generations, a new program for youth! This program is designed to introduce children to ASU and the college experience, and inspire them to walk down the same path that you did. Sun Devil Generations creates a lifelong ASU connection by involving children in various ASU traditions and programs specifically catered for youth. The ASU Alumni Association hosted a launch party this past September in which 200+ future Sun Devils (birth through 8th grade) and their families attended.

Our next Generations program activity is Story Time with Sparky and will feature Sparky and ASU faculty member and children’s author, Dr. Conrad Storad (Children’s Author of the Year 2001). The event will take place December 8, 2007 from 10:00am - 12:00pm in the Basha Library, Old Main, Tempe Campus. Enjoy stories, ASU traditions, hot cocoa and cookies!

Arizona State Fans Bowl Travel Announcement

Undefeated and ranked 4th in the BCS standings, the Arizona State football team is coming off a strong, 31-20 victory against California and is eligible for post-season play. With the team off to a 8-0 start, Sun Devil fans can now begin making their travel plans to follow the Sun Devils this bowl season. ASU Athletics, the Sun Devil Club, and the Arizona State University Alumni Association will partner with Premiere College Sports, one of the nation's leading sports travel firms, to offer fans unique, first-class travel and hospitality packages for any bowl game in which ASU participates through the creation of "Sun Devil Sports Travel."

"Sun Devil Sports Travel" will offer an array of travel packages for all Sun Devil fans to follow their team in the postseason. Packages could include air transportation, deluxe accommodations, hospitality as well as other tour amenities.

Fellow Alum Showing on Fox Business

We are very excited about our interview on Fox Business News. I know it is on Direct TV, but not sure if basic cable carries carry the program yet (its very new). All we know is that last time we were on that station we were lucky enough to be a featured article on yahoo.com the following 2 days. So we have our fingers crossed they will do same this time as well. My business partner will be the one they interview. He and I formed our business a few months ago and launched within the last few days. His name is Nick Murphy and he graduated from ASU, but with a Broadcasting and Journalism degree. I graduated with my BIS degree in 2004 concentrating on Business and Sociology.

Message from Director of the School of Letters & Sciences, Frederick C. Corey, Ph.D.

Dear Alumni,

Thank you! The Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies degree program is now over ten years old and 5,000 alumni strong. You have pursued our core values of respect for the individual, the integration of ideas, experiential education, and a commitment to community.

ASU recognizes the importance of our strategic planning: embedded success programs, partnerships both inside the university and in the community, and interdisciplinary inquiry. The appreciation has brought additional responsibilities. The faculty and staff in the school have been asked to develop the liberal arts curriculum on the new Downtown Phoenix campus. The undertaking is enormous. We are providing foundational instruction in humanities, social sciences, the arts, and the natural sciences for all students on the burgeoning campus located on Central Avenue in the city center. In addition, the Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies degree program is now university wide, with offerings on the Tempe, Downtown Phoe nix, West, and Polytechnic campuses.

With these additional responsibilities comes a new name, the School of Letters and Sciences, a name that places us within the intellectual center of the university. The name was approved during the summer of 2007, and this fall, the Arizona Board of Regents will review a proposal to make the school an independent, free-standing enterprise.

None of this could have happened without the foundation you built. Thanks to your dedication, diligence, and scholarship, ASU has asked us to play a major role in the growth of the New American University.

Homecoming 2007

It is that time of year again to show your Sun Devil pride by coming out and joining the 'GO GOLD' Homecoming 2007 Weekend. Fellow Interdisciplinary Studies Alumni, students, faculty and administration will be out to meet and greet at the University College Tent (new home to the Interdisciplinary Studies degree) on the Old Main lawn for the Homecoming Block Party at 4:00PM on October 27th, 2007. During the meet and greet there will be a food buffet, music and activities for all! Don't miss out!

If you have children, be sure to arrive early to take advantage of the kid's activities, as well as, to see the Homecoming parade come down University Drive at 3:00PM. What better way to share your Sun Devil pride with your young ones than by bringing them to the fun events that come along with being a college alumnus. After all, we are all a members of the Sun Devil family.

Lastly, and for most the best part of Homecoming is the football game...at 7:00PM the Sun Devil football team (6-0), will be taking on the California Golden Bears in Sun Devil Stadium. If ever there was a time to support our team this is it! With a 6-0 record they need our support so that the new coaching staff understands that we as Alumni our here to support our athletics.
